SEO has a reputation problem. Say "search engine optimization" to most store owners and they picture complicated dashboards, expensive consultants, and mysterious algorithms. It sounds like something you need a degree to understand.
But here's the truth: the basics of SEO are surprisingly simple. And for most Shopify stores, the basics are all you need to start showing up on Google and getting free traffic.
You don't need to become an SEO expert. You just need to stop ignoring a few things that are completely within your control.
Start with your product pages
Your product pages are the foundation of your store's presence on Google. And most stores leave easy improvements on the table.
Write unique product descriptions
If you copied the description from your supplier or manufacturer, Google sees duplicate content — and it doesn't rank duplicates well. Take 15 minutes per product to write something original. Focus on what the product does for the customer, not just its specs.
Use descriptive page titles
Your product title should include the words someone would type into Google. "Blue Widget" is okay. "Blue Ceramic Coffee Mug — Handmade, 12oz" is much better. Think about what your customer would search for.
Add alt text to every image
Image alt text helps Google understand what your pictures show. It also makes your store accessible to screen readers. Keep it simple and descriptive: "blue ceramic coffee mug on wooden table" is perfect.
Get your technical basics right
Shopify handles a lot of technical SEO for you (sitemaps, SSL, mobile-friendly themes). But a few things are worth checking.
Make sure your store loads fast
Google uses page speed as a ranking factor. The biggest culprits on Shopify are uncompressed images and too many apps. Remove any apps you're not using, and make sure your product images are optimized (most should be under 200KB).
Set up Google Search Console
This is free and takes about five minutes. Search Console tells you which searches bring people to your store, flags any issues Google finds, and lets you submit your sitemap. If you haven't done this yet, do it today — it's the single most useful SEO tool available.
Check for broken links
If you've deleted products or changed URLs, you might have broken links that frustrate visitors and hurt your rankings. Search Console will show you these, or you can use a free tool to scan your site.
Start a blog (seriously)
Product pages can only rank for so many searches. A blog lets you target the hundreds of questions people ask before they're ready to buy.
If you sell outdoor gear, your product pages compete for "buy hiking backpack." But blog posts can target "how to pack for a day hike," "best hiking trails near Portland," or "what to wear hiking in winter." Those are all searches made by your potential customers — and a blog is how you capture them.
You don't need to publish every day. Even two or three posts a month, published consistently, can make a meaningful difference within a few months.
Focus on the right keywords
Keywords are just the words people type into Google. You don't need expensive tools to find good ones — just common sense and a bit of research.
Think like your customer
What would you type into Google if you were looking for your products? Start there. Ask friends, family, or actual customers what they'd search for.
Go for specific over broad
"Shoes" has billions of results. "Women's waterproof hiking shoes size 8" has far fewer — and the people searching for it are much closer to buying. These specific, longer phrases are called "long-tail keywords," and they're where small stores can compete.
Check Google's suggestions
Type your product category into Google and look at the autocomplete suggestions and "People also ask" section. These are real searches that real people are making. They're free keyword ideas, handed to you by Google itself.
Build links naturally
Links from other websites to yours are one of the strongest ranking signals. But you don't need a link-building "strategy" — you need content worth linking to.
- Create genuinely helpful content. If your blog post is the best answer to a common question, other sites will link to it naturally.
- Get listed in directories. If there are industry directories or "best of" lists for your niche, make sure your store is included.
- Engage with your community. Participate in forums, respond to questions, and contribute to conversations in your niche. When you're known as helpful, links follow.
Be patient (but start now)
SEO is a long game. You won't see results overnight — it typically takes 3-6 months for new content to start ranking meaningfully. But that's exactly why you should start now rather than waiting.
Every month you wait is a month of compound growth you're missing. The stores that start today will be miles ahead a year from now.
